clash of the titans |||. aus v sa 08-09

What a series we have had in AUS with the unofficial battle for the No.1 rankings.

We all know India is now a powerhouse as well, however they are still to perform constantly o/s as have AUS & SA.

Back to this series,
every match went the full distance of completing five days.

The First Test

The first Test Match saw SA chase down the highest fourth innings total (414) to win.
Fantastic batting from the SA top order saw them chase down the total for a loss of only four wickets.
In the process a new star was revealed to the cricketing world in the form of J.P. Duminy.

The Second Test

The second Test Match was another great match.
SA were down and seemingly out when in their first innings they were on the verge of following on.
Then the incredible performance of the Duminy/Steyn partnership turned the match on its head.
SA went on to win mid-way through the fifth day.

The Third Test

The third Test Match was another great contest.
This time AUS started poorly in the first innings and then recovered to post 445.
SA in reply were also in early trouble before Boucher with the help of the tail reached 327.
AUS declared their second innings 375 runs ahead.
SA held out for most of the fifth day with Steyn/Ntini frustrating the AUS bowlers.
Steyn was removed with less than 10 overs remaining when the courageous SA captain (Smith) walked out to the middle with a broken finger.
He was retired hurt in the first innings after Mitchell Johnson broke the little finger in his left hand with a rising delivery. He bravely padded up for the last wicket to try and save the Match. In the penultimate over (10 balls left) Johnson bowled a superb delivery on a good length that came back hit Smith’s off-stump and handed AUS a deserved victory in the third Match.

A great series from start to finish between two heavyweights played in the right spirit. A fitting result in a 2-1 series win to SA. Whilst officially AUS are still ranked No.1, most cricket followers (in AUS anyway) now recognise SA as the new No.1 team of Test Match cricket.

Now for the return three Test series in SA in Feb-March.

I must be in the 1% category that consider Aussies to be on top of the table still, it being official and all…
