Why speak up now?

Ganguly outburst should have come after the series: Gavaskar

New Delhi, Oct 9 (Press Trust of India)

The legendary Sunil Gavaskar today said Sourav Ganguly’s outburst against the selectors was “understandable” but he should have waited till the end of the series against Australia to maintain the harmony in the dressing room.

“I think the outburst is understandable, I only wish that this outburst was only after the series had been concluded”, Gavaskar said.

“Ever since he made his debut in 1991-92, there has been a gun pointed at Ganguly’s head. Everybody has always presumed that he has got into the Indian team because of reasons other than cricket and he has to prove them wrong over and over again”, Gavaskar said.

“So one is sympathetic with the way he is feeling…With what happened to him in recent times, being omitted from Rest of India squad when everybody else was picked to play”, he added.

“By saying all these things, he has not helped himself and I dont think he has helped harmony in the dressing room. All that he had to say, he could have said after the series was over”, Gavaskar told CNN-IBN.

Ever the opportunist, aren’t you?
Now with the possibility of unpalatable truths of the past sixteen years of Indian cricket coming out, you suddenly become “understanding”.

For sixteen years he has been targeted for being from the wrong part of the country, a bengali, playing for Bengal. For sixteen years he was left at the mercy of prejudiced selectors, a megalomaniac Aussie coach.

As you now say, for sixteen years he has played with “a gun pointed at his head” – whatever he achieved he did so while being subjected to persistent harassment. How many players can you name who could last this long in international cricket if subjected to similar bullying from their management?

What do you say to foreigners who now refer to him as racoon sperm and a lizard and a freak – because in their judgement he was overrated?

And now you have the audacity to say he should have waited till the end of the series?
Where was your voice when Vengsarkar dropped from the Irani Trophy squad?

He is within his rights to declare his retirement whenever he wishes to, why should it affect the dressing room if there is no legitimacy to his grievance? Why does my heart no longer bleeds for the celebrated Indian dressing room?

No Mr Gavaskar, you do not get away by voicing your “sympathy” now after he has retired,
it is too little too late. Sixteen years too late.

Never ashamed of your shameless opportunism, are you?
You are only the first of many such voices that are yet to come out in sympathy.

With many hypocrites like yourself at the helm of Indian cricket,
I no longer care if Team india goes to hell from here on.
