photomontage of fielders at silly point

so long? Mr Dravid.

So you are leaving, Mr Rahul; and I am
struggling to find which bit of your tenure as captain I should remember you by.

To many your resignation has comes as a surprise and they cannot understand why?
Even to those who have never met you or who has never had any access to the
dramas of the Indian dressing room, you are the perfect gentleman,
the true professional, you are too good for the BCCI.

So it cannot be that you feel exposed without anyone to take blame for your failures?
No more out of form Saurav Ganguly, nor those Greg Chappell’s experimentations.
Maybe because Greg Chappell is not there to stand by all your inadequacies. No?

Let’s see then, what could I really remember you by,
the umpteen run chases and a 6-1 win against a Srilankan side?
Nah, that was the supersub era, when you had an “extra” player for each match.

The test match win in West Indies? But, sorry that was on a pitch so freaky
that it gave your stand and block block block style an unfair advantage.
The 1-(1) test series win in England? still that thing about the rain.

No, I do not want to remember your failures either, there are too many.

But Mr Dravid,
there is an episode in Pakistan, that gets pushed back into the netwebs of the past;
but it so clearly epitomises your strong captaincy, and everything you stood for;
besides which everything else simply fades into insignificance.

Don Quixote

Dravid was clearly given the option of including Ganguly in the ODI squad as the 16th member.

In fact, team manager Raj Singh Dungarpur – who, there are reasons to believe, has patched up with Ganguly – even spoke to BCCI president Sharad Pawar to increase the One-day squad to accommodate Ganguly.

But Pawar made it clear that he would oblige only if Dravid wanted him to do so. Dravid, however, turned down the request, reasoning that the Behala southpaw’s presence would infuriate Chappell no end. In effect, his decision not to upset Chappell, effectively sealed Ganguly’s fate.

Yes, your perfect legacy to Indian cricket; so long and good luck, Mr Dravid.
