The World Cup Ahead!

It was a very tiring week for the Indian and Pakistani cricket fans. They were not only forced to witness their favourite teams departing from the World Cup in the very first round, but were also asked to go through the Woolmer murder saga. The news kept many conspiracy theorists afloat and the focus on the World Cup was somewhat lost.

However, the beginning of the Super 8 matches has pushed some of those events off the center stage, and the mood is ripe again for some exciting cricket in the Caribbean. I personally came out of the Indian defeat quickly enough, and am now looking forward to the rest of tournament as a neutral cricket fan. The first salvo at he cup was made by the Aussies when they defeated their biggest rivals, the South Africans, in a runathon in their last league encounter. This was Australia’s fourth consecutive 300 plus score in the World Cup format, including the winning 359 runs scored against the Indians in 2003 final.

So, what lies ahead in the Super 8 matches now? Well, Aussies suppressed yet another 300 plus score, this time 377, and got Windies humbled in the process. So did the Kiwis in their latest encounter against the hosts, and this might mean an end to Lara’s World Cup dreams. The South Africans were lucky in grabbing a solitary wicket win against the Sri Lankans in another Super 8 match yesterday, which saw Malinga taking four wickets in four consecutive balls. What an exciting fightback by the islanders! One could just dream of such turnarounds in any other game. The mood for an exciting grand finale to this World Cup is building up now, you could say!

Srilanka is winning matches but I am yet to be convinced that Srilanka is the side to beat. It has few but glaring weaknesses.

    1, Shaky middle order
    2, Ordinary opening bowlers
3, Batsmen (except Jayasriyau) not exactly firing.

I hope they get stronger by the day and provide some real excitement to the cricket lovers.
