Five Stars for the future. Some have international experience, some don’t. But, in a few years time, these five should be establishing themselves in the England team, and if they aren’t then they should be in the selectors minds.
Ravinder Bopara – Age 21
First Class Averages: Bat: 34.03 Bowl: 49.95 List A: Bat: 29.47 Bowl: 28.60
After playing just one ODI match, Ravi Bopara made it into Englands world cup squad ahead of the more experienced (but without too many ODI caps) Mal Loye. Has looked good in his two ODIs and performed well for Essex last season in both One day competitions and First Class.
Adil Rashid – Age 19
First Class Averages: Bat: 20.66 Bowl: 26.96 List A: Bat: 15.66 Bowl: 46.00
One of the most talked about English spinners. After bursting onto the scene in a first class match for Yorkshire last season, where he took 6-67 on his debut, Adil Rashid has been closely watched by Yorkshire and England fans alike. A promising allrounder who has been promoted from Under 19s to the A team, it is just a matter of time before he gets a senior international cap.
Mark Lawson – Age 21
First Class Averages: Bat: 12.53 Bowl: 37.54 List A: Bat: 7.50 Bowl: 47.00
Another legspinner from Yorkshire, Mark Lawson hasn’t got as much recognition as Rashid. But in the latter part of the season the spin twins formed a partnership of which Lawson got many wickets. More of a Shane Warne style spinner than Rashid, he could be Englands answer to a legspinner, but he has competition from Rashid to be Englands second spinner after Panesar.
Steve Davies – Age 20
First Class Averages: Bat: 36.60 Ct/St: 78/8 List A: Bat: 17.65 Ct/St: 35/11
With England’s troubles over the first choice keeper, a new candidate has crept up on Jones/Read/Nixon. Steve Davies has talent with both gloves and bat, which he showed with Worcestershire last season. A promising keeper batsman who scored over 1000 runs last season, which he turned 20 halfway through.
Stuart Broad – Age 20
First Class Averages: Bat: 16.50 Bowl: 29.30 List A: Bat: 31.00 Bowl: 33.52
Made his way into England’s ODI team at the end of the season after a successful season at Leicestershire. Son of former batsman Chris Broad, Stuart Broad was a key player in the 20-20 cup final and showed lots of promise in the first class league. Will make more ODI appearances and is expected to break into the test team in the year coming up, if he can fight off the competition among the fast bowlers
This will be followed up at the end of the English season
