“Welcome back, mate! I am glad you made it!”

It was Ganguly at his best – Mr Dileep Premachandran on Cricinfo

“Welcome back, mate. I am glad you made it”.

Along the way, he had stitched together a wonderful partnership with Pathan. Both men took turns to attack, and the run-rate never slowed despite half the side being back in the pavilion. In many ways, it was Ganguly at his best, positive and decisive with his strokeplay, and unafraid to get into line even when the bowling was at its most hostile.

Somehow with Mr Dravid getting so much praise for his ‘innings building’ approach, even in ODIs, we have forgotten what it is like when both batsmen attack in turn. The effect that has on the bowlers.

We have only us to blame for persistently fooling ourselves about what the attributes of a complete and ‘class’ batsman should be. Yesterday was a lesson for us to re-learn.

Yes, there may not be another for the rest of the series. But Ganguly has proved it can be, and showed how it should be, done.
